The Natural Beauty Brands You Need to Add to Your Bathroom Shelf ASAP
Natural beauty brands are shaking up the conventional beauty world and consumers are starting to take notice. Today's high-tech serums and face masks have been replaced with products featuring locally sourced ingredients that actually benefit the planet just as much as they benefit your skin.
This summer, I decided to take the plunge and begin my own personal clean beauty journey. At first I felt a bit overwhelmed, I didn't really know where to begin and wasn't ready to fully toss all of my favourite and trusted products into the garbage. But I started slowly, first swapping products that ran out and then eventually I began to start stocking up on different natural brands as I discovered them.
And I get it, we've grown up in a world where were used to conventional cosmetic brands dominating the beauty industry. It's hard to leave the familiar and the norm. But after doing my own research and learning how truly harmful some of the biggest beauty brands are to the environment, animals and to our own health, I knew I had to make some serious changes to my beauty regimen.
Not sure where (or how) to begin your own clean beauty journey? I've shared some of my favourite natural beauty brands that are disrupting the beauty industry for the better. These brands have created products that are just as effective as the ones you are accustomed to using, only healthier.
For those ladies who are all about achieving thick brows and lashes, then I've got an eco-friendly product that'll seriously do the trick. Plume Lash and Brow Enhancing Serum is an all-natural wonder that promotes longevity and fullness of lash and brow follicles leaving you with dramatically longer and thicker lashes and brows without having to use any harmful chemicals. This was one of the first all-natural products I tried out after learning about it from Think Dirty. I personally only use it on my brows, but since using it my brows have become noticeably thicker.
Clove + Hallow
When it comes to eco-friendly beauty products, Clove + Hallow is as good as they come. Clove + Hallow is all about creating clean, vegan, and cruelty-free cosmetics that are made from real, natural ingredients that really work. This means you’ll get the same pigmented, quality products without compromising on healthy ingredients. I'm obsessed with their Lip Crème in Damsel. I picked this up when my go-to red from MAC was done and I couldn't be happier. The colour not only goes on smooth but it can last through a full day of work.
Mabrook & Co.
I first learned about Mabrook & Co. at the True Beauty Talk event I attended earlier this summer and I'm so glad that I had the chance to chat with some of their staff. When I saw that Mabrook & Co. carried deodorant, my first reaction was there's no way in hell that I'm giving up my tried and trusted Dove deodorant. But the friendly team explained how their deodorants worked (and how amazing they smelled) and I knew I had to give them a try. Their deodorants combat odour by combining pure, natural, and organic ingredients in the most powerful and safe formula possible. I opted to try their vanilla & mint deodorant and I couldn't be happier. The formula doesn't just leave me feeling clean and odour free all day, but it can even make it through and intense bootcamp. It's safe to say I'll be picking this up again.
Basd Body Care
The recently launched, Toronto-based body care company was started by Ashley Meston and Phil Lebeau, who have created a body care line that consists of organic, plant-based, and cruelty-free products. Now, if you've been following along with my blog you know that I absolutely love this brand. The reasoning is, I love how they're totally transparent about what goes into their products, and so you're never left wondering what you're actually putting on your skin. They use plant-based and organic ingredients, they're non-GMO and paraben-free, and most importantly, they only test their products on consenting humans!
After defying the odds and overcoming a life-threatening brain tumor that was believed to be a result of environmental toxins, Indie Lee created her ever so popular eco-friendly beauty collection. Her collection of products are made with the finest ingredients that protect both your body and the Earth, not to mention her branding is totally amazing. I'm hooked on her Rosehip Cleanser, as it helps to soothe my skin, lock in moisture, and treat the appearance of redness.
If you’re looking to step up your skincare routine, look no further than Wyld Skincare who has created an incredible collection of natural konjac cleansing sponges that are vegan, with no harmful chemicals or preservatives. I use Wyld’s charcoal konjac sponge to wash my face every evening before bed and it helps to clean and gently exfoliate my skin, leaving me with happy and glowy skin.
Inspired by the plants grown in her grandmother’s garden, Graydon Moffat first began creating Graydon Skincare products in her kitchen. Now, this Toronto company creates vegan and all-natural products that will help you maintain the youthfulness of your skin. I picked up Graydon's Face Foam and it's been an incredible addition to my skincare regimen. It's a very sensitive foam that really lathers on the skin when wet, which helps to remove makeup and oil. Infused with an impressive line up of healthy ingredients like Apple Cider Vinegar, Bamboo, and Willow Bark, the Face Foam helps to tone and smooth the skin, and is perfect for a wide variety of skin types (from sensitive, combination and oily)!
When it comes to hair care products, it always seems like you can’t even pronounce the names of the ingredients that you’re putting on your scalp. This is why I love Yarok Hair, a vegan haircare line that’s eco-friendly and smells incredible! Each product is made with organic and all-natural botanicals that will help nourish the hair and scalp, leaving you with healthy, volumized locks. My favourite is Feed Your Roots mousse as it helps transform my flat and somewhat damaged hair into a voluminous and healthy mane.
Wild Hill Botanicals
Located in beautiful British Columbia, Wild Hill Botanicals focuses on growing organic herbs on its farm in East Sooke (uh, how cool is that?). Their products use the fresh organic oils and house made hydrosols to craft products that are amazing, completely natural and inspired by the landscape of this beautiful coast. As a born and raised Vancouverite, I was so excited when I found this brand. I currently use the Blackberry face serum every single morning before I put on my makeup. This serum is made with a blend of highly nutritive oils, which help to repair the skin's barrier mechanisms, as well as calm and nourish the skin.
What I love about this Toronto-based brand is that the owner (Julie Clark) has created a simple skincare line that uses high-quality, no-fuss formulations and ingredients that you can actually pronounce. My favourite product is the Invigorating & Balancing Toner, which is a very simple, no-fuss toner that does wonders for my skin. Within one use, my skin felt refreshed, soothed, and hydrated thanks to the Willow Bark, Rose and Lavender Water, Cleary Sage and Geranium Oil. What I love is that this toner doesn't leave my skin feeling tight or dry, just hydrated and clear.
It's safe to say that my natural beauty journey has only just begun, but I'm excited to see where it takes me. I know that it can seem overwhelming and pretty much impossible to think of eliminating popular brands from your beauty arsenal, but if this is something you're passionate about it will become easier to make the transition.
My goal is to have found a natural mascara, foundation, and possibly even a natural bronzer/blush that I love by the end of the year. If you're a fan of clean beauty brands, let me know what they are in the comment section, as I am always excited to discover and try new ones!
